Refined vs Unrefined Olive Oil in Soap: Does It Matter?

Refined vs Unrefined Olive Oil in Soap: Does It Matter?

Why Some Bar Soaps Do More For Reactive Skin Than Others

Most bar soap starts with the same three or four ingredients on paper: olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, water. On an INCI list, an olive oil is an olive oil. In practice, the same botanical name can point to two very different raw materials, and for skin that reacts easily, that difference matters.

Saaren Taika builds every bar soap, from Tea Tree Soap to Sea Buckthorn Soap to Bladderwrack Salt Soap, on the same base: a Cretan, organic certified extra virgin olive oil, the same quality you would use in cooking. Many soap bases on the market instead rely on refined olive oil, oil that has been solvent extracted, heat treated, bleached or deodorised to make it colourless, scentless and cheap to produce at scale.

What Refining Actually Removes

Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil is roughly 85 to 99% fatty acids. The remaining small fraction is where the tocopherols, polyphenols and phytosterols live, the compounds that give olive oil its natural colour, scent and much of its value for skin. Refining is designed to strip exactly that fraction away, because a neutral, colourless, long lasting oil is easier and cheaper to manufacture with.

The fatty acids stay. What disappears is the part that actually supports reactive, easily irritated skin during a wash.

Why This Matters More When Your Skin Reacts Easily

A cleanser is not just about removing dirt. For skin that is dry, prone to redness or easily unsettled, what the soap leaves behind after rinsing matters as much as what it washes away. An olive oil base built on unrefined, extra virgin oil forms a gentler, less aggressive lather and leaves more of its natural compounds behind than a soap built on refined bulk oil, even when both list the same INCI name.

This is also why an unrefined soap costs more and has a shorter shelf life than a mass produced bar. Award winning, certified extra virgin olive oil costs more than a refined cosmetic grade oil, and it requires more careful handling. A soap that lasts three years on a shelf has usually been built from oil with almost nothing left in it that could spoil, and almost nothing left in it that could support skin either.

The Same Logic Runs Through Our Other Formulas

The same principle guides the shea butter, sea buckthorn and bladderwrack in our other formulas. We choose unrefined, minimally processed raw materials whenever an unrefined version exists, because for demanding and reactive skin, the ingredient's full composition, not just its name on the label, decides how it performs.

Two products can share an ingredient list and still perform very differently. The difference is usually not on the label. It is in what happened to the ingredient before it got there.

PS. A soap is not judged only by how much it foams or how long it lasts on the shelf. We judge ours by how your skin feels afterwards.
