Bladderwrack Eye Cream Roll-On: Clinical Study Under Dermatological and Ophthalmological Supervision

Saaren Taika Bladderwrack Eye Cream Roll-On was tested in a 28-day clinical in-use study under dermatological and ophthalmological supervision at Eurofins laboratory. This article covers what was measured, how the study was conducted and what the results showed.

How the Study Was Conducted

22 people participated in the study, 20 women and 2 men. Participants were aged between 45 and 70 years old.

All participants had sensitive skin prone to eczema and eczema-related redness. In addition, all had wrinkles on the crow's feet area, dark circles and puffiness around the eye area.

Participants used the product at home under normal everyday conditions: once in the evening on the first day and twice daily, morning and evening, for 28 days thereafter. Study visits took place on day 1 before the first application and at the end of the 28-day period.

Efficacy was assessed across nine areas. Clinical scoring was performed on crow's feet wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. Instrumental measurements assessed skin hydration, skin barrier function and the biomechanical properties of the skin. Participants also completed a questionnaire on the product's effects and their experience of using it.

Tolerability was monitored through the dermatologist's clinical assessments, the ophthalmologist's evaluations and the sensations reported directly by participants during the study or in daily logs.

Wrinkle severity was assessed on a 7-point scale, where 0 means no wrinkles and 6 means very deep wrinkles.

The baseline average was 3.45. After 28 days of use, the average had fallen to 2.50.

In clinical assessment, wrinkle severity reduced by 29%.

Dark Circles

The severity of dark circles was assessed on a 10-point scale.

The baseline average was 4.59. After use, the average was 3.14.

In clinical assessment, dark circles brightened by 35%.

Puffiness Around the Eye Area

Puffiness severity was assessed on a 10-point scale.

The baseline average was 2.95 and after use it was 1.86.

In clinical assessment, puffiness around the eye area reduced by 37%.

Instrumental Measurements

Skin Hydration

Skin hydration was measured using the Corneometer CM 825 device, which measures the moisture content of the skin's surface layer.

The baseline average was 41.84 and after use it was 63.17.

Corneometer measurement showed skin moisture content increased by 54%.

Skin Barrier Function

Skin barrier function was assessed by measuring transepidermal water loss using the Tewameter TM 300 device. The lower the reading, the better the barrier function of the stratum corneum.

The baseline average was 28.02 g/m²/h. After use it had fallen to 14.84.

Tewameter measurement showed the amount of moisture lost through the skin reduced by 46%.

Skin Elasticity and Firmness

The biomechanical properties of the skin were measured using the Cutometer MPA 580 device.

Results showed that skin firmness improved in 95% of participants and skin elasticity improved in 95% of participants.

Participants' Own Experience of the Bladderwrack Eye Cream Roll-On

At the end of the study, participants responded to a questionnaire on the product's effects. 100% of participants responded positively to the following statements:

• The skin looks smoother.
• The skin feels younger, more renewed and more supple.
• I am satisfied with the product's efficacy.
• I would recommend the product to a friend.
• I would buy the product for daily use.

In addition, 100% of participants felt the product helped reduce redness and eczema-related sensitivity, as well as crow's feet wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness around the eye area.

Tolerability

No adverse events were reported during the study. No participant discontinued the study due to the product. No new irritation reactions were observed in the dermatologist's or ophthalmologist's clinical assessments at the end of the study period.

Summary of Results

In the 28-day clinical in-use study, positive changes were observed across all measured areas.

Clinical scoring showed:

• Wrinkles reduced by 29%
• Dark circles brightened by 35%
• Puffiness reduced by 37%

Corneometer measurement showed:

• Skin moisture content increased by 54%

Tewameter measurement showed:

• TEWL value reduced by 46%

Cutometer measurement showed:

• A positive effect on firmness and elasticity in 95% of participants

Tolerability was excellent: no adverse events and no discontinuations.

Consumer Study Results

Alongside the clinical in-use test, a separate consumer study was conducted in which 46 people used the product for four weeks. Participants assessed the product's effects based on their own experience.

After four weeks of use:

• 96% felt the skin around the eyes felt more moisturised
• 83% felt the skin around the eyes looked smoother than before using the product
• 79% felt wrinkles had reduced around the eye area
• 79% felt there was less puffiness under the eyes
• 70% felt the product helped reduce the visibility of dark circles
